Globally, the oil and gas industry produces over 3 barrels of water for each barrel of produced oil. This number is much higher for mature reservoirs. The treatment, and disposal or re-injection of the produced water costs the industry over 45 billion dollars annually. More importantly, uncontrolled flow of water traps large volumes of reservoir fluid and makes it inaccessible.

Water is produced together with oil and gas in many reservoirs. While some of the produced water is beneficial and un-avoidable, much of it is un-wanted and its production is undesirable. In addition to its direct cost of production, treatment and disposal, un-controlled water flow can leave some of the oil and gas trapped in the reservoir, thus reducing the recoverable reserves.
